Shape of Dreams Starless Path Update Explained
What the v1.4 Starless Path update added to Shape of Dreams, which systems it changed, and what returning players should do first after a break.

Version 1.4, called The Starless Path, arrived on 17 September 2026 and is the largest update the game has had. It shipped on the same day as the console launch, so PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2 players received it as their first version. If you stopped playing before September 2026, this is the summary of what changed.
What the update added
| Addition | What it is |
|---|---|
| Cetus | A new Traveler: a ranged frost fighter who shields himself and his allies |
| The Way of Stars | An expansion of the Traveler Mastery system, where episodes connect like a constellation |
| The Starless Path | A new ending that opens from progressing The Way of Stars |
| Six Common Identity Memories | Shared passives that can replace a Traveler’s own Identity Memory |
| New Memories, Essences and Stars | Including a new Memory for Shell and new Flexible Stars |
| Cosmetics | New costumes, emotes and souvenirs, plus a Unique Memory and Banner for the Starving Beast |
What the update changed
- World bosses gained patterns. From Ominous Dream difficulty upward, some world bosses use harder and more powerful abilities. The announcement names Ominous Dream, Nightmare and Limbo.
- The Master of Dream’s Chain Lightning changed. Once it hits a summon, the next chain target also prioritises summons, which quietly revalues summon builds against that fight.
- Damage-over-time stacking was capped. Where multiple Mental Corruption stacks land on one target, the tick rate is capped instead of scaling with stack count.
- A silent boss failure mode was fixed. Some bosses could occasionally use only basic attacks without casting anything.
- Co-op spawning was bounded. Monsters spawn faster with more players, but from the second loop the number alive at once is capped.
- Balance pass. Memories, Essences and Traveler Stars were adjusted to widen the range of viable builds.
Performance and stability
The update added a Dynamic Resolution option and improved overall performance and stability, including better behaviour in co-op and long sessions. The follow-up patch, v1.4.0, landed on 21 September 2026 with further fixes. The developer also published a follow-up post on 20 September acknowledging feedback and outlining what they are still improving.
What this means for your old guides
If a guide names a version older than 1.4, assume it needs re-checking. The balance pass touched the exact pieces build guides are written about, and boss behaviour changed for the harder difficulties. The update notes do not list every adjusted number, so a guide that claims precise pre-patch damage figures cannot be trusted after the patch.
Three things to do when you come back
- Check your build version. If it predates 17 September 2026, update before doing anything else.
- Open The Way of Stars. Each Traveler has a chapter list, and that screen tells you what is left to unlock, including the route to the new ending.
- Visit the Identity Memory slot. Six shared passives are available now, so your old passive may no longer be the best choice.
